Majuro

The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial

Majuro is a Central Pacific atoll that serves in the Caine’s story as a way station between combat operations and the long, repetitive escort assignments that followed. The ship’s call there came as its part in the Marianas battle ended, and the atoll also entered the narrative through a modest purchase that later gave the crew’s tedious routine a lasting soundtrack.

A Way Station After Saipan

While the Saipan campaign was still underway, the Caine was detached from the attack force and ordered to escort a damaged battleship to Majuro. That assignment ended the minesweeper’s role in the Marianas battle. It missed both the Turkey Shoot and the invasion of Guam; as those major operations unfolded, the ship returned to escort duty. From Majuro, it accompanied a carrier to Kwajalein.

Part of the Central Pacific Shuttle

Majuro was one stop in a sequence of transfers rather than the Caine’s destination. After accompanying the carrier to Kwajalein, the old minesweeper proceeded with it to Eniwetok, returned to Kwajalein with LSTs, and then went back to Eniwetok with a tanker. By August, the ship was still shuttling among Central Pacific atolls under Com Fifth Fleet, its wartime activity reduced to repetitive escort work.

A Trace of Shipboard Life

Jorgensen bought the crew’s Oklahoma! album at Majuro. Later, the record was played repeatedly in the wardroom and borrowed by the radio shack to broadcast over the loudspeakers. For Willie, the music preserved the taste of the ship’s weary, uneventful stretch at sea. Majuro therefore anchors not only a change in the Caine’s operational role but also one small, concrete detail through which that monotonous period remained vivid in memory.
